Dalene, C. 2008
Since the creation of this (and other) collage piece(s), I have commenced research into documenting our family ancestry.
I’m not sure why it interests me so much, but I like it because (unlike many of my other interests and so-called ‘hobbies,’) this seemed to spring up from nowhere.
I remember finding this in my Grandma’s old photo albums when I was about sixteen, and thinking to myself how happy I was to have a little window to the past. I love those albums and have produced a lot of art inspired by them over the course of the last few years. Dalene is very humble when I tell her this, but she is a woman of few words.
If Dalene’s main intention was to collate a kick-ass collection of photos from every stage of her life, mission accomplished. She’s still kicking, which is the best part. She always tells me stories about Kenneth, her late husband and sweetheart since her early 20’s, and their whirlwind romance that survived the test of time. He would ride his bike across town to ping little stones off her bedroom window. He liked to drink and eat and smoke and holiday in the caravan he bought with Grandma, their pride and joy. I have inherited their love of the ocean, and appreciate being reminded that sometimes people do just get along, and create wonderful, peaceful, passionate, humble, awesome lives together - even if they didn’t change the world.
One day, not long after they were married, he left this on the lawn for her, citing how proud he was for going through all the bottles with his friends on one Sunday afternoon.
Looks like I inherited that, too.
Bless.
I miss my second life in Brisbane. Considering spending money I don’t have by heading back for a visit on my 21st birthday to see An Horse at the Zoo in Fortitude Valley, because Melbourne is foggy and depressing.
This is Natasha in her old house in Ashgrove, where I more or less lived (without actually living there for any particular period of time).
